While many cruise lines have their own private islands, Ocean Cay offers something refreshingly different. Instead of giant water slides and amusement park-style attractions, you'll find a destination built around nature, relaxation, and the beauty of the Bahamas.
I’ve had the pleasure of visiting the Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve myself, and it's easy to understand why so many MSC guests say it's one of the highlights of their cruise. Whether you're looking for a quiet beach, excellent snorkeling, incredible sunsets, or simply a place to unwind with your favorite drink in hand, Ocean Cay delivers.

Where Is Ocean Cay?
Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve is a private island located in the western Bahamas, approximately 65 miles southeast of Miami. Exclusive to MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys, the island is featured on many sailings that include Miami or Port Canaveral.
What makes Ocean Cay especially unique is its story. Rather than developing an untouched island, MSC transformed a former industrial sand excavation site into a protected marine reserve. Over several years, millions of dollars were invested in environmental restoration, native landscaping, and coral conservation to return the island to a thriving natural ecosystem.
Today, Ocean Cay combines beautiful beaches with an ongoing commitment to marine conservation, creating a destination that feels much more connected to the natural beauty of the Bahamas than many traditional private islands.
What Makes Ocean Cay Different?
Every cruise line likes to promote its private destination as something special, but Ocean Cay genuinely has its own personality. I think this slower pace is exactly why Ocean Cay has become one of my favorite cruise destinations. I enjoy relaxing by the water without feeling like I have to rush from one attraction to the next.
Instead of focusing on water parks, zip lines, or oversized attractions, the Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve emphasizes relaxation. The beaches are spread throughout the island, giving guests plenty of room to find a quiet place to enjoy the ocean. The island is easily walkable, with paved trails connecting many of the beaches that encourage you to explore rather than stay in one central area.
One of my favorite aspects of Ocean Cay is that it feels less commercialized than some other private islands. You won't find towering waterslides or loud music everywhere you go. Instead, you'll hear waves rolling onto the beach, palm trees swaying in the breeze, and the occasional golf cart or tram passing by.
If your perfect beach day includes crystal-clear water, and very little stress, Ocean Cay may quickly become one of your favorite cruise destinations.
The Beaches of Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve
One of the biggest advantages of Ocean Cay is the variety of beaches available throughout the island. Each has its own personality, so it's worth taking a little time to explore.
Lighthouse Bay & Lighthouse Bar
Whenever I visit Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, I almost always start at Lighthouse Bay. It's only a short walk from the pier, the snorkeling is excellent, and it's a great place to ease into the day before exploring the rest of the island. Crystal clear water and an abundance of fish, and the occasional sea turtle, make it a great snorkeling location (especially closer to the lighthouse side). But don’t worry, netting prevents any large marine life from entering the area. There are three bars within easy walking distance and a food truck, for a convenient lunch option.
There are some free chairs and umbrellas available, but for a more comfortable place to hang out, I would suggest the Lighthouse Bar. In addition to traditional bar seating, you’ll find padded sofas lining the ample deck space.
In the evening, this area becomes one of the best locations to watch the spectacular lighthouse light show.

Lighthouse Bay is convenient and beautiful, but one of the best parts of Ocean Cay is exploring. Walking just another five or ten minutes can lead you to a quieter beach with a completely different atmosphere.
Sunset Beach
Sunset Beach is the place to be later in the day. Watching the Bahamian sunset from this beach is an experience many guests remember long after their cruise ends. This is also an area where you might be able to score some premium lounging space without having to rent chairs or an umbrella. Hammocks as well as beach chairs and some umbrellas are dotted along this beach area. The Ivory, Cactus, and Pineapple Bar are also close by for any refreshment needs. Keep in mind this beach does face open ocean and does not have a dedicated lifeguard stations. While there are regular jet ski patrols to keep tabs on guests, you’ll want to ensure you utilize common sense swimming practices if you decide to venture into the waters.
North and South Beaches at the Lagoon
As the name suggests, these beaches surround the island’s lagoon. The lagoon offers calm, warmer waters, and also netting to keep any large sea life out. If you plan on trying kayaking or paddleboards, you’ll pick up your rental and the far end of South Beach. If you are traveling with children, this is an ideal area to spend the day. Chair and umbrella rentals, as well as cabanas, are available on both beaches. Seekers and Boho Buffet are also easily accessed from South Beach.
Bimini Beach
Bimini Beach is at the far side of the island, opposite North Beach. It’s a more out of the way location offering space to avoid crowds and enjoy the open ocean waters and island breeze. It offers a great place to snorkel and explore marine life, as well as sunken statues near the rock jetties. A food truck and bar are also close by. This is also an open water section of beach, so again, common sense water safety is needed if you decide to enjoy a swim.
Ocean House Beach (aka Yacht Club)
This is perhaps one of the best perks if you are sailing in Yacht Club and have Ocean Cay as a port. This beach area is reserved exclusively for Yacht Club guests. Ocean House Beach offers an elevated experience with premium loungers, towels, and beverage service. Lunch is served at the Ocean House restaurant, offering a sit-down dining experience with premium beverages. Bimini Beach also offers dedicated Yacht Club reserve seating. The beaches are within walking distance of each other, but because they face a slightly different side, you’ll often find the waves less intense on one side or the other (and may change over the course of the day).
Snorkeling and Marine Life
The waters surrounding Ocean Cay are some of the clearest you'll find in the Caribbean, making snorkeling one of the island's most popular activities. Depending on conditions and a little luck, you may spot colorful tropical fish, sting rays, sea turtles and a variety of marine life that now call the restored marine reserve home.

Rental equipment is available, but it can sell out on busy days. Having your own gear also makes it easy to jump in the water whenever you find a great snorkeling spot.
MSC continues to invest in coral restoration and marine conservation efforts around the island, helping preserve this beautiful ecosystem for future visitors.
Food and Drinks
The Boho and Seakers buffet are complimentary for lunch, typically open from around 11:30 to 2:00 pm. Both offer the same food choices, with your typical American favorites such as burgers and hot dogs, along with some Caribbean inspired dishes such as Jerk chicken, pineapple BBQ glazed pork ribs and fried plantains. Salads, sides and desserts are also included. Shaded seating is also available at both locations to enjoy your meal.
Several food trucks are also scattered throughout the island, offering a pared-down menu, but still a convenient option to grab a quick bite or snack.
The only pay food on the island is the Smiling Fish snack bar, which offers tasty ice cream options, and the Lobster Rolls available at the food trucks.
Numerous bars are also scattered throughout Ocean Cay, serving frozen cocktails, beer, wine, soft drinks, and specialty beverages.
Even better, if you've purchased the deluxe beverage package, it works on the island as well. That means your favorite tropical cocktail can follow you right to the beach without any additional charge, depending on your package.

The complimentary island buffets are surprisingly good and save you from spending valuable beach time walking back to the ship.
Things to Do Beyond the Beach
MSC offers multiple excursions during an Ocean Cay stop. Guided kayak, snorkeling, and jet ski tours are available. Boat tours are also available, including an excursion to a sandbar to interact with Sting Rays, as well as more leisurely, pleasure sailings to just enjoy a cocktail and island breeze. On the island, you can also learn more about the ongoing conversation efforts at the new marine conservation center.
If you are in need to even more relaxation, spa services are available on the island as well. Finally, you can enjoy some retail therapy at the shops in Ocean Cay Village. Here you’ll find some Bahamian-inspired souvenirs, logo merchandise, as well as more practical essentials for your beach day.
One of my favorite things to do at Ocean Cay is simply walk. The island is surprisingly easy to explore on foot, and every beach has its own personality. Some of my favorite photos have actually come from wandering between beaches rather than staying in one place all day.
The Lighthouse Light Show
As evening approaches, the island takes on a completely different atmosphere.
The signature lighthouse becomes the centerpiece of a colorful light and music show that many guests consider the highlight of their visit. If your itinerary includes an overnight stay—or a late evening departure—be sure to make time for this experience.
Watching the lighthouse illuminate against the night sky, while the sounds of the ocean surround you, creates a memorable ending to your day on the island. On our overnight sailing, the lightshow was offered at two different times. We enjoyed both performances, and while they're similar, watching the lighthouse illuminate against the dark Bahamian sky never got old.
Cabana Rentals
If you are looking for a dedicated perch for the day, consider a Cabana Rental. They are located on North, South and Bimini Beach, offering covered seating for up to six guests, cushioned furniture, a ceiling fan to cool off with (and a plug to recharge electronics). Floating mats and snorkeling equipment are also included with your rental. Cabanas are also available to rent on the Yacht Club beaches.
Overnight Stays: A Unique Experience
On four night sailings from Miami and Port Canaveral, your itinerary can include an overnight stay at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. In my opinion, this is one of the best features of visiting the island.
Most private islands empty out in the late afternoon as ships prepare to depart. At Ocean Cay, guests often have the opportunity to enjoy the island after many day visitors have returned to the ship.
One thing that surprised me was how different the island feels after most guests head back to the ship for dinner. It becomes incredibly peaceful. Evening strolls along the beach, sunset photography, the lighthouse show, and a quieter atmosphere make overnight visits feel especially relaxing.
You can also enjoy the Luna Libre party, hosted on the lighthouse bay beach, complete with DJ and bonfires.

Watching the lighthouse show, enjoying sunset on the beach, and experiencing Ocean Cay after most guests return to the ship completely changes the atmosphere.
Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve: Future Enhancements
MSC officially announced plans for future enhancements to the island in early 2026. Guests can start to see these changes in late 2027, which are expected to include the ability to dock two ships, new on island specialty restaurants, and additional cabanas. New enhancements are also planned to their marine conservation experience, offering a more hands-on experience.
In addition, two new beaches are planned. The first will be a dedicated family beach with children's playground and splashpad, along with other family friendly activities. The adults are also getting their own dedicated playground, with an adults-only exclusive retreat.
Also in the works is a second island, named Sandy Cay. With a planned opening, sometime in 2028, the island is expected to be about 1/3 the size of Ocean Cay. Details are still scarce on what the final island will contain, but we do know the island is meant to offer a more elevated experience and will be exclusive to MSC and Explora Journeys. The island will be self-contained, with boat access from Ocean Cay’s main island.

Tips for Your Visit
Here are a few of my recommendations that can help you make the most of your day:
Bring reef-safe sunscreen. As part of their ongoing conversation efforts, sunscreen needs to be reef-safe.
Bring water shoes. Some beaches are rockier than others, and you need water shoes for a painless entry. Even beaches without much rock, can have sharp coral and shells, making the water shoes essential to protect your feet.
Walk beyond the first beach you see—you may discover a quieter spot.
Pack or rent snorkeling equipment if you enjoy marine life.
Bring a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated.
Don't rush back to the ship if you're staying overnight. Sunset is one of the most beautiful times on the island.
If walking isn't your preference, complimentary trams make it easy to get around.

Unfortunately, no, you’ll need to make your way back to the ship, even when staying overnight. All aboard is typically midnight, with the island shutting down (i.e. bars) by around 11 p.m.. However you can get an early start the next day, typically as early as 6am.
