Cruising Reimagined: The Ultimate Guide to the Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages isn’t trying to be everything to everyone—and that’s exactly why it works so well.
For travelers who love the idea of a cruise but have hesitated because of crowds, rigid schedules, or the feeling that cruising just isn’t their style, Virgin Voyages offers something refreshingly different. It’s a cruise experience designed for adults who value thoughtful details, flexibility, and a sense of ease from the moment planning begins to the moment they step back on land.
At Wavebound Travel, I focus on cruise experiences that align not just with where you want to go, but with how you want to feel while getting there. Virgin Voyages consistently stands out for travelers seeking a modern, elevated approach to cruising—without sacrificing comfort, quality, or peace of mind.
1. The Virgin Vibe: Strictly 18+
Virgin Voyages is exclusively adults-only (18+), and that choice shapes the entire onboard atmosphere. This isn’t about nonstop nightlife—it’s about intention.
Without kids’ clubs, water slides, or family-focused programming, the ship’s energy feels calmer and more balanced. Lounges invite you to linger. Pool decks feel like retreats rather than activity zones. Even the flow of the ship feels more relaxed.
For couples, solo travelers, friend groups, or anyone celebrating a milestone, this adults-only environment creates space to truly unwind—whether that means a quiet morning on your balcony or an unhurried evening over dinner.
2. A Revolution in Dining (No Buffets!)
One of Virgin Voyages’ most appreciated features is its approach to dining. Instead of a traditional main dining room and buffet, Virgin offers more than 20 distinct eateries, all included in your fare.
There are no upcharges, no assigned dining times, and no pressure to “upgrade” for a special meal. From elevated steak and seafood to globally inspired dishes and inventive plant-based options, dining becomes part of the experience—not a logistical hurdle.
This flexibility allows travelers to eat when and how they want, reinforcing Virgin Voyages’ overall philosophy: less structure, more ease. Some examples include:
The Wake: A glamorous steak and seafood grill.
Pink Agave: Upscale, authentic Mexican.
Gunbae: The first Korean BBQ at sea (and a high-energy social experience).
Razzle Dazzle: A "vegetable-forward" eatery with a twist.
Because every meal is made-to-order, the food quality rivals top land-based restaurants.
3. No Drink Packages—Just a Bar Tab That Works Differently
One of the most common questions travelers have about Virgin Voyages is about drinks—specifically, why there’s no traditional drink package offered onboard.
This is a very intentional choice.
Instead of locking guests into an all-you-can-drink model, Virgin Voyages uses a Bar Tab system. Think of it as a prepaid onboard credit specifically for beverages. You add a set dollar amount before sailing, and that credit is then applied to drinks you purchase throughout the voyage. It is also not specific to the cabin or sailor, feel free to buy a round for a new found friend.
The Bar Tab can be used for:
Cocktails, wine, beer, and spirits
Specialty coffee and cold-pressed juices
Non-alcoholic drinks beyond what’s already included
What’s important to know is that basic beverages are already included—things like still and sparkling water, sodas, juices, drip coffee, and tea are available without any extra cost. The Bar Tab is simply there for the drinks you’d normally expect to pay for.
For many travelers, this approach feels more natural than an unlimited package—especially if you enjoy quality drinks without feeling obligated to drink more than you want. However, unused Bar Tab credit does not carry over at the end of the voyage, so choosing the right amount matters.
This is where planning becomes key.
At Wavebound Travel, I help clients decide whether a Bar Tab makes sense at all—and if it does, how much to add based on itinerary length, sea days, drinking preferences, and current promotions. The goal is comfort and value, not guesswork.
4. A Ship That Feels Like a Boutique Hotel at Sea
Virgin Voyages ships are designed to feel modern, open, and intuitive. Cabins make smart use of space, while public areas are laid out to reduce congestion and encourage flow.
Rather than flashy décor meant to impress at first glance, the ships prioritize comfort and usability. Whether you’re relaxing in a tucked-away lounge, enjoying the spa’s thermal suite, or taking in ocean views from the deck, the spaces feel intentional and welcoming.
This design philosophy mirrors the overall experience: polished, but never stuffy.
5. Itineraries That Balance Exploration and Relaxation
Virgin Voyages focuses on itineraries that allow travelers to experience destinations more fully. Many sailings include late nights or overnights in port, giving you the freedom to explore beyond the usual daytime highlights.
Private destinations, like the Beach Club at Bimini, are designed to feel like a continuation of the voyage rather than a crowded excursion. The rhythm of the trip feels balanced—active when you want it, restorative when you need it.
6. Understanding Virgin Voyages’ New Voyage Fare Tiers—and Why They Matter
In late 2025, Virgin introduced three new fare categories. Rather than having to pick a higher category stateroom to get the 'perks', you now pick the stateroom you want and then the experience level to go with that stateroom. Choosing the right one is a crucial part of the planning process, as your tier determines your flexibility and your priority for dining reservations.
The Base Fare
Best for the traveler who is 100% committed to their dates and wants the best possible value. This tier is non-refundable and does not allow for date changes. Dining reservations open 15 days before sailing.
The Essential Fare (Most Popular)
This is the "sweet spot" for most sailors. It offers more flexibility, including "Classic WiFi" and the ability to receive Future Voyage Credit if your plans shift (up to 45 days prior to sailing). Most importantly, you can book your dining 45 days before sailing—a vital head start for securing the best tables.
The Premium Fare
For those who want the full Rockstar treatment, this tier includes "Premium WiFi" (streaming capable), a daily Bar Tab credit, and the earliest dining access at 60 days out.
7. Understanding Gratuities and Fees
To offer better price transparency and allow for easier comparison with other travel options, Virgin Voyages now lists gratuities as a separate item.
The Cost: Tips are approximately $20 per sailor, per day when prepaid (or $22 if paid onboard).
The Culture: Even though it is now a separate line item, the "no-tipping" culture onboard remains. You won't be expected to carry cash or tip individual servers—everything is covered by this daily fee.
8. "Always Included" Luxury
Despite the shift to tiered fares, Virgin still leads the industry in "Always Included Luxury." Regardless of your fare tier, you never pay extra for:
All Food: No "specialty dining" cover charges at any of the 20+ eateries.
Essential Drinks: Soda, sparkling water, juices, drip coffee, and tea.
WiFi: Every sailor gets internet access included.
Group Fitness: Yoga, HIIT, spinning, and bungee classes are all free.
Entertainment: Immersive, modern shows that feel like a night out in Vegas or London.

Why Planning Matters—Even on a “Simpler” Cruise
Virgin Voyages is designed to feel effortless, but that ease is the result of thoughtful systems working behind the scenes. Cabin location, sailing dates, Voyage Fare tiers, Bar Tab decisions, and itinerary pacing all shape your experience in ways that aren’t always obvious during online booking.
My role as a travel advisor at Wavebound Travel isn’t just to make a reservation—it’s to look at the full picture, anticipate details, and guide you through decisions that will matter once you’re onboard.
Because a truly great vacation doesn’t start when you step onto the ship.
It starts with knowing every detail has been handled with care—so you can relax and look forward to the water.
